Hartford Clerk Structure
Connecticut does not use a Texas-style county clerk or district clerk for Hartford court filings. The primary court clerk for this site is the Clerk of the Superior Court because the Superior Court is the statewide general trial court. Hartford Clerk Responsibilities
The Clerk of the Superior Court is the first court contact when an online lookup does not provide the record, a certified copy is needed, an older case file may have moved from local storage, or a party needs help identifying the correct case channel. The clerk does not replace the statewide lookup tools, but the clerk remains the court-of-record contact for official files.

City and Probate Clerks
The Hartford Town and City Clerk is a municipal office. It keeps Hartford births, deaths, civil unions, and marriages for events that occurred in the city from 1852 to the present. It is the right office for a Hartford marriage license or certified marriage certificate, but it is not the Clerk of the Superior Court and does not maintain Superior Court criminal, civil, family, or housing case files.

Hartford Clerk Access Limits
Connecticut public access rules do not make every court file fully public online. Juvenile records are confidential under CGS 46b-124. Criminal records can be erased under CGS 54-142a, and disclosure of erased records is restricted under CGS 54-142c. Family matters involving protected-party information may not display in public lookup systems.
Municipal records, such as some police or city agency records, can involve Connecticut FOIA and Hartford's records request process. Court records follow Judicial Branch access rules and court orders. If a lookup does not show a case or document, the next step is to ask the clerk or records custodian rather than assume the record never existed.
